Thrifty Dog Adoption Event – Hernando Sun

On Saturday, July 31, Animalade’s – Thrifty Dog Thrift Store held its annual animal adoption and awareness event. The animal adoption and awareness event provided a central location for local foster organizations to adopt their animals and raise awareness for their cause. All funds raised at the event went specifically to the organizations that were in attendance. The Thrifty Dog Thrift Store offered a 50% discount on all items in the store except for clothing, 50/50 raffles, food vendors, t-shirts for sale and music during the event. ‘event.

Animalade is actively involved in the community by working to build relationships with non-profit organizations. This event is another way to connect the community with animal-related causes. They’ve helped local foster groups adopt animals, hosted an adoption and awareness event, provided local shelters with linens and food, and donated to Southeastern Guide Dogs.

Organizations that attended include Southeastern Guide Dogs and Caring K9s. The Hernando County Animal Shelter has brought in dogs available for adoption.

Southeastern Guide Dogs is a voluntary organization that trains dogs for veterans. Some of the programs they offer are:

  • Guide dogs – guiding veterans with sight loss
  • Service Dogs – alleviating symptoms of PTSD and other disabilities
  • Facilitating therapy dogs – reassuring patients and families at military medical facilities
  • Emotional Support Dogs – to befriend and comfort veterans with unique needs
  • Gold Star Family Dogs – comfort military family members who have lost a loved one in service to the nation
  • Military Family Support Dogs – providing companionship in support of sacrifices made

Southeast Guide Dogs have been helping veterans since 1982 and providing a lifetime of service nationwide at no cost, without any government funding. They operate solely on private donations. Today they have over 1,000 dogs under their auspices.

You can even volunteer to be a puppy raiser for Southeast Guide Dogs! Their informational brochure stated, “You will take on one of the tiny superheroes and help them grow for just over a year. You will teach them basic obedience and house manners, and you will take the puppy with you on your daily trips. Or if you want to help raise a puppy, but know full time would be too much; they have co-breeders for the puppies! You can raise a puppy with a friend or fellow breeder and puppy sitters to back you up when breeders have to travel or just need a helping hand.

The other organization participating in the event was Caring K9s and it is a therapy dog organization. They were established in February 2018 and are a Florida 501C3 nonprofit volunteer organization made up of dedicated therapy dog handlers and their dogs. The goal of this group is to join caring people with their personal dogs to form a network of therapy teams with a mission to share kindness, comfort and love.

What is a therapy dog? A therapy dog has been well trained to provide affection, comfort and love to anyone in need. Caring K9s dogs undergo extensive training throughout their career as therapy dogs and have passed the required AKC test as well as Caring K9s trainer certification. All training is completely voluntary and paid for by the owner of the dog. This includes training classes, dog tests, leashes, collars, and dog business cards that you can distribute at each facility used.
