| LA County Animal Care & Control offers big dog adoption discounts

The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control will partner with the Best Friends Animal Society to encourage county residents to “Live Big” with Adopt a Big Dog Special Discounts for Large Dogs through January 31 .

A disproportionate number of large dogs are among the thousands of healthy adoptable dogs who don’t come out of California animal shelters each year, simply because they don’t have a safe place to call home.

That’s why the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) and the Best Friends Animal Society are teaming up for the “Live Large – Adopt a Big Dog” campaign through January 31 to rally residents to adopt or foster dogs 35 lbs. or more.

Adoption fees are only $22 at all DACC animal care centers, which includes adoption, microchipping, neutering, and vaccinations. Please note that additional charges may apply for items such as pet licenses.

“Opening your home to a large dog can be a rewarding experience,” said DACC Director Marcia Mayeda. “We hope more people will consider these dogs who have so much love to give and add them to their family.”

“The goal of this campaign is to bring 500 or more large dogs into homes in two weeks,” said Kaylee Hawkins, Pacific Region Director at the Best Friends Animal Society. “Since it has been difficult to live large in the usual way during this pandemic, our message is that a large dog can bring a lot of love and fun into your life. Even if you live in a small space, there is has a large dog waiting in a shelter that may be perfect for you.

Residents who are unable to commit to adoption can still have a huge life-saving impact by temporarily opening their home to an adoptive dog through their local shelter, while the rescue or shelter helps to find a permanent adopter. Food, supplies and medical care are provided free of charge to host families by DACC.

The foster family allows the dogs to decompress in a calm and stress-free environment. Their personalities blossom and foster families are able to provide insight into the best permanent home for the dog. Those interested in becoming temporary animal caregivers should visit for more information.
