Langley Animal Shelter to Cut Dog Adoption Fees in Half – Aldergrove Star

Looking for a furry friend but not sure where to go?

Well, the hunt could now be coming to an end.

The Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS) is hosting a Spring for a Furever Friend adoption event, offering half-price adoption fees for all adoptable dogs May 15-21.

Sarah Jones, the society’s executive director, said the facility has about 13 dogs awaiting adoption – five of them have been at the facility for “months and months”.

The company is dealing with a record number of rebate requests from community dog owners.

“Now that the pandemic restrictions have been lifted, we are seeing more people returning to work and traveling more. This has resulted in longer stays for our highly adoptable animals,” Jones explained.

With people facing “difficulties finding pet-friendly accommodation and dealing with behavioral issues with their dogs,” the situation has become complex, she added.

Jones hopes the adoption event will encourage families to consider bringing a shelter dog into their home.

“They might be inspired to take the next step and seek adoption,” she said.

In addition to providing a home for the dogs, the adoption event could also free up resources for other families in need.

Those who need support will be able to access company resources that are currently unavailable due to the high number of dogs already in their care.

“The adoption event will bring attention to these beautiful dogs who have been in our care for a long time,” said Maddison Joyce, the company’s animal welfare manager.

Over the past few weeks, LAPS has reportedly received several calls each day requesting the release of large breed dogs between the ages of one and three years old.

According to Jones, adopting a society pet means saving two lives – “the dog you bring into your home and the vulnerable or homeless animal that will be saved because of the space you have provided.”

Each year the Humane Society helps around 1400 vulnerable animals in the Langleys.
