Celebrity dog trainer says owners give their dogs affection at the wrong time

A famous dog trainer once said that human affection at the wrong time can have a detrimental impact on your dog’s behavior.

Jimmy Allen of St. Helen’s opened his business Dog paw six years ago after being inspired by the reality show The Dog Whisperer, featuring Cesar Millan’s work with wayward dogs.

Since then he has worked with the likes of reality TV star Charlotte Crosby, actor Danny B Miller and Leeds United footballer Stuart Dallas, even going to America to train and work with Cesar.

Now the expert is sharing his tips and tricks with over 100,000 followers on instagram and Tik Tok.

However, Jimmy realizes that with such a large platform, getting the right message across is important.

That’s why, after a surge of families welcoming dogs into their homes during lockdown, he’s warning owners of the dangers of giving your pet affection at the wrong time.

Jimmy explained how most interactions with dogs make humans feel good, they also reinforce bad behavior.

He said TeamDogs “For example, when owners come home from work and greet their dog as they enter, the hello and praise tell the dog that it’s okay to be excited and jump on others.

“Anytime the human has the instinct to give affection to a dog, it’s usually not the right time to do it.”

Another problem he encounters daily is that owners buy dogs based on their appearance rather than their genetics and temperament.

Jimmy said: “Genetics play a huge role in the lives of puppies, if the mother and father are aggressive, chances are the puppy will be too.

“Although you can maintain their aggressive nature and live a happy life, he will never be relaxed and sit by your side.”

The former glass factory operator suggested that a simple solution to this problem was to walk the dog before bringing him home. This way it allows you to see how he acts on leash and around other dogs.

The social media star has her own three dogs, Skye, an eight-year-old South African Boerboel; Junior, a three-year-old Belgian Malinois and Zion, a seven-month-old Cane Corso.

The dogs go to work with him to help with training sessions – Skye and Junior were both rescue dogs while Zion was his first pup in years.

Jimmy revealed his favorite celebrity dog to train was Coronation Street’s Catherine Tyldesley dog Sausage, Geoff, who he taught to leave his crate on command.

The Liverpudlian even trained The Real Housewives of Cheshire star Dawn Ward’s dog.

Dawn’s dog, Dolly, has been dubbed “Chesire’s baddest dog”, but was trained thanks to Jimmy and with 10 years of experience under his belt, it’s no surprise he’s the perfect man for the job.
