Fee reduced from $150 to $50 this weekend
The Jackson County Animal Shelter is reducing the cost of adopting a dog at its All American Summer Dog Adoption event from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Adoption fees for all dogs 6 months and older will drop from $150 to $50. There is also a $25 dog license fee.
The animal shelter is at 5595 S. Pacific Highway between Phoenix and Talent. Appointments are not necessary.
While all dogs 6 months and older are eligible for reduced adoption fees, the shelter and volunteer group Friends of the Animal Shelter emphasizes dogs that have been at the shelter for a long time waiting for a home.
During the weekend event, adopters must still go through the standard application process and meet screening requirements.
The available shelter dogs have been screened for temperament and health issues and determined to be adoptable companions. All adopted dogs are neutered and neutered, microchipped and vaccinated before going to their new homes. A collar and leash are included for each dog.
The shelter is at full capacity to house dogs due to a combination of a slowdown in adoptions over the past six months and a recent increase in the number of stray dogs entering the shelter. After a surge in pet adoptions during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, shelters across the country are seeing a drop in adoptions and an increase in abandoned dogs.
The weekend event is made possible by Friends of the Animal Shelter, which covers the cost of the discounts and provides volunteers to help run the event.
