Winston-Salem dog trainer shares tips for families welcoming new pets

before the rain comes, Brian. Thank you. And the common Christmas gift for families is a very cute and adorable puppy. If your kids have been begging you to unbox a furry friend this holiday season, there are some things you need to know first. Keep in mind and tell us more about it. I would like to welcome Geralyn Kelly. She is an elite dog trainer and owner there. Winston Salem. Geralyn, thank you very much for your time this morning. Thank you for. You bet. The first question. Let’s cut to the chase. What should people keep in mind when looking for a dog this holiday season? So the most important thing I can say is that you want to find a dog that matches your lifestyle in your home. So if you have young children, you need to consider the space they have fenced off in backyards, energy levels. It’s really about finding a dog that matches your home. Uh, so that later, you know, four or five months later, you wouldn’t say Oh, no, you know, I picked the wrong dog. That would be terrible, but what supplies? We have the house. We have the garden. What supplies will people need for any soft drink? So new puppies you definitely want to have bowls. One for each water and food. Um, and one thing to remember that a lot of people don’t think about. You should clean these bowls every day. I know it sounds, you know, like, Wow, do I say that? But yeah, people often don’t clean their dog bowls, so make sure you clean them every day. A crate is the greatest thing. Your checkout. You know, you never want to feel bad putting your dog in a crate. It’s their safe place, their babysitter and their supervisor. So that’s the first thing you need, uh, dog food, of course, for the age group you’re bringing the dog. So if it’s puppy food, adult food. If you have an elderly person, there is food for the elderly. Large breed, small breed, a cholera harness, and I tag them a leash, toys, and chews. Uh, you definitely want to have an enzymatic cleaner in your house because you’re most likely going to have accidents. Uh, a few grooming tools, like a brush and nail clippers and, of course, a poop scoop and poop bags. And when you bring home a new puppy, a new cushion that could be a major lifestyle change for many families. What should new dog owners expect when they bring home this new pop? We therefore want to remain discreet. Uh, you know, a lot of times you’ll see those Christmas videos where the puppy comes out of the box and everyone in the house is screaming and the kids are screaming and jumping up and down. We certainly don’t want to do that. This is a new environment for this small dog, big dog, older dog, no matter how old or where they are from, this could be a scary situation for them, so we want to keep it quiet, low key, make him feel comfortable. Um, but you can expect to have an accident. They’ll chew on things they’re not supposed to. Um, dogs don’t learn overnight, so we have to have lots of patients with them and always remember that they don’t do anything to drive you crazy. They just haven’t been trained yet. So, you know, instead of focusing on all these bad things they do, make sure you focus on the good things they do. Make sure they are comfortable in their cage. You know, you can’t do everything to create and expect them to like it. So it takes a lot for them to be comfortable in your home. So, you know, lots of patients, lots of calm to soothing tones. And lots of love. I mean, that’s the big deal. Lots of love. Love and patience will definitely be the key. Before we go, Geralyn, this morning with the precise and human company that you are teaming up to help some of these new pet owners tell us more about this partnership. So starting in January, uh, New Year’s Eve that we’re going to have on Saturday. Uh, some seminars and workshops. One of them brings your new dog home. What you need, what to expect. One of them is a workshop on potty training and unwanted behavior, CPR and first aid, and then bringing a baby home to a house that already has dogs. Um, so two of them will be done monthly. The other two will be done sporadically, CPR and the baby. But the other two will be monthly, and they’re absolutely free to the public. So often dogs end up in shelters because they are too big and they jump around too much, or because we have small children at home. And we have an Australian Shepherd and they bite kids. So instead of saying we can’t take care of this dog, we want to invite you to come in and sit down for an hour. And we want to help you overcome these issues before you throw in the towel. It’s absolutely cool. Geralyn, thank you very much for your time this morning. Lots of good advice. Lots of advice for those new puppy owners. We also wish you a very Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas to you too. Thank you for. You bet. WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE KEEP IN MIND WHEN LOOKING FOR A DOG THIS SEASON? >> SO THE GREATEST THING I CAN SAY IS, YOU WANT TO FIND A DOG THAT MATCHES YOUR LIFESTYLE IN YOUR HOME. So if you have small children, you want to take that into account. HOW MUCH SPACE THEY HAVE. FENCED BACKYARD. ENERGY LEVELS. IT’S REALLY SO MUCH TO FIND A DOG THAT SUITS YOUR HOUSE. SO THAT LATER, YOU KNOW, FOUR TO FIVE MONTHS ON THE ROAD, YOU DON’T SAY, OH, NO, I’M CHOOSING THE WRONG DOG. >> THAT WOULD BE TERRIBLE. >> BLAH SUPPLIES? WE HAVE HOUSE AND YARD? WHAT SUPPLIES WILL PEOPLE NEED FOR A NEW UP? >> SO NEW PUPPIES YOU WANT TO HAVE BOWLS, ONE FOR WATER AND EHAC FOOD. A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T THINK ABOUT IT, YOU HAVE TO CLEAN THESE BOWLS EVERY DAY. I KNOW IT SOUNDS, NOW IT WOW, DO I HAVE HEAV TO? YEAH. MANY PEOPLE DON’T CLAN THE DOG’S DELOW BOWLS SO SKEURE YOU CLEAN THEM EVERY DAY. A CRATE IS THE GREATEST THING YOU ARE CRATE, YOU KNOW, YOU EVERYONE WANT TO FEEL BAD FOR PUTTING YOUR CRATE TO EAT. THEIR BABY-SITTER AND SUPERVISOR IS THE FIRST THING YOU NEED. IF YOU HAVE ITS SENIOR, THERE IS SENIOR FD.OO A DOLLAR OR HARSTNE, SS ID TAG, A LEA, SH TOYS, THINGS FOR THEM TO CHEW. CLAP AROUND POOPER SCOOPER AROUND BAGS OF POOP. >> AND WHEN YOU BRING HOME A NEW PUPPY, A NEW PET, COULD THAT BE A MAJOR LIFESTYLE ADJUSTMENT FOR FAMILIES? WHAT IS SHODUL NEW DOG ENDER N TEXT PECK WHEN THEY BRING HOME THE NEW UP? WE WANT TO KEEP IT LOW, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF TUESDAY AM YOU SEE THE CHRISTMAS VIDEOS WHERE THE! PI COMES OUT OF THE BOX. EVERYONE IS SCREAMING AND THE CHILDREN ARE SCREAMING AND BURGING! JUMP UP AND DOWN. WE DON’T WANT TO DO THAT. THIS IS A NEW ENVIRONMENT ANOTHER NEW DOG, IG B DOG, OLDER DOG, NO MATTER THEIR AGE OR WHERE THEY ARE FROM. THIS COULD BE A SCARY SITUATION FOR THEM. SO WE WANT IT TO BE LOW AND QUIET AND MAKE THEM FEEL COMFORTABLE, BUT YOU CAN EXPECT TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT, THEY WILL CHEW THINGS THEY ARE NOT SPECIALIZED FOR. DOGS LEARN OVERNIGHT SO WE HAVE TO HAVE TS OFLO PATIENCE WITH THEM AND ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THEY DON’T DO THINGS TO MAKE YOU CRAZY. THEY WERE NOT TRAINED YESTERDAY. SO INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON THESE BAD THINGS THEY DO, MAKE SURE YOU FOCUS ON THE GOOD THINGS THEY DO. MAKEUR IF THEY ARE COMFORTABLE IN THE CRA.TE YOU CAN’T PUSH A DOG INTO A CRATE AND EXPECT EK THING TO LIKE IT. IT TAKES A LOT TO BE COMFORTABLE IN YOUR HOME. A LOT OF PATIENCE. MANY SOOTHING TONES OFAL CM. THEN LOTS OF LOVE. I MEAN I HAVE A GOOD THING. IT’S LOVE. >> LOVE AND PATIENCE WILL BE REQUESTED BEFORE LEAVING THIS MORNING FOR THE HUMANE SOCIETY YOU ARE TEAMING UP TO HELP NEWET OWNERS TELL US ABOUT THIS PARTNERSHIP? >>OS FROM JANUARY THE NEW YEAR WE WILL BE HOLDING SOME SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS ON SATURDAYS ETNE O OF THEM I BRING HOME YOUR NEW DOG AND WHAT YOU NEED.
